About the Conference
Since its inception in 2008, the event has been held in Turkey during both the peak and low of the dry bulk rates.
The GFC Global Financial Crisis had a dramatic effect on the world shipping markets. The Baltic dry Bulk Index September 2008 to February 2009 saw the largest and most dramatic fall in Dry Bulk shipping rates in history. With falls of up to 98.4% from the highs only a few weeks before, dry bulk rates fell below the break even daily costs, and several ships were chartered for lower than bunker rates.
The later part of 2009 saw a slight improvement in business sentiment and the early part of 2010 a dramatic improvement in demand for dry bulk goods and ships to transport them. The severe cold snap which affected Europe and America together with Chinas insatiable demand for commodities saw both price improvements for commodities and shipping rates.
